The Costs of Drywall

Most large home improvement projects require the hanging of drywall, which generally means hiring a drywall contractor to do it.  These specialists vary in the prices they charge, so it’s important to compare rates in order to get the best deal.

The Costs
Prices for materials and labor vary by location and project, so the best way to get an idea of cost is to talk to contractors and explain what you need.  On average, it’s generally $1 per square foot, but it can vary on the materials used and the amount of hanging they’ll actually need to do.

Keep in mind that, additionally, you tend to get what you pay for when it comes to drywall cost, particularly with regard to installation.  Nailing up the sheets of drywall is the easy part.  The hard part is covering the holes and seams so that when they’re painted over, they don’t show.  If you try to cut corners in this area and hire someone who’s cheap but does shoddy work, you’ll have to look at the consequences every single day!

More for Less
Keep in mind that the smaller the job, the higher the costs will be per square foot.  They do have to make a living, so the more work they have, the more they’ll actually make, so they’ll be more willing to cut you a break per square foot if they can profit from it.  The best way to get an idea of cost is by talking to several contractors before you make your final decision.  Check their references, get estimates, and you’ll find that your drywall project was easier than anticipated.
