Attic Insulation

Attic Insulation

Insulation is designed to control moisture, reduce the movement of heat, and assure proper ventilation in your home.  Attic insulation is essential to a comfortable home.  Whether you add foam insulation, fiberglass insulation, or spray forma insulation, it will help control your long-term energy costs.  A challenge for many homeowners is knowing how much they need and the type of material they should use.

Do You Have Proper Attic Insulation?
Before you undertake an attic insulation project, the first thing you want to do is inspect the attic thoroughly.  Check to see if there are fiberglass strips between the rafters and joints.  Are rafters open and exposed?  Is the ceiling finished?  If there is insulation, what type do you have?  Does it look water damaged?  And if it does, is it leading to any problems up there?

Types of Insulation
The most commonly used kinds of insulation are fiberglass, spray foam, and standard foam strips.  Each come with its own advantages and drawbacks.

- Fiberglass insulation is usually easy to spot.  It’s usually yellow or pink, and it will be trapped inside thick paper or blown and stuffed between walls.  It offers the most ventilation, but is not as good an insulator as foam.

- Spray foam insulation is a hardened foam that started off as liquid, but was solidified in the cracks and seeped in to fill every hole.  This is the strongest type of insulation. that was once liquid but has solidified in the cracks and seeped in to fill every hole. This is the strongest insulations available.

- Standard foam insulation is cut into strips, much like fiberglass batts, and is similarly laid in between the rafters. This allows ventilation between the cracks while also the insulation of foam.

Despite each one’s advantages and disadvantages, every home has different needs, which is why an attic insulation contractor is quite beneficial in determining what type and how much of it you need to make your home a comfortable living spot.  The most recent movement in insulation is cellulose insulation, an eco-friendly solution that consists of recycled newspaper that is shredded, packed into strips, and treated with fire retardant.  Some experts predict that this will replace spray foam as the insulation of choice.

Finding the Right Attic Insulation Contractor
It’s very difficult to tell the type and quantity you need without the help of an expert.  In fact, there are many contractors who specialize in this sort of thing.  As every home reacts differently in the various climates, it’s hard to know what you’ll need for your home.  If you’re not 100% sure, or if you see mold or moisture buildup in your attic, call a professional.  Attic insulation is all too often overlooked by homeowners, but it contributes to your indoor air quality, your energy costs, and your own health and well-being.  If you think you might need more insulation, or less, or a different type, get a professional opinion on the matter.
